LED Bulbs Save Substantial Energy, A Study Finds

While that may seem self-evident, until the release of the report on Monday the answer remained unclear.

That is because no one knew if the production of LED lamps required more energy than needed for standard incandescent bulbs.

When a company moves into a new facility they dedicate lots of floor space to their maintenance department. As the company grows they tend to cannabalize the space they need from their maintenance department. Warehouse Lighting...You've come a long way baby. From Sodium to Metal Halide to Fluorescent. Over the years, industrial lighting has made some great advancements. I don't claim to be an expert at industrial lighting but I've done some research for this blog post and these are some of the things I've learned: 

Sodium Lighting is an older lighting technology and its illumination can be considered more yellow than white. Sodium lighting gives the appearance of less light when compared to halide or fluorescent lights. 

Metal Halide lighting is also considered "Old School" but is still the preferred choice in demanding environments where dirt, vibration and high temperatures are imminent. Metal Halide lamps offer high intensity pure white light but also offer less energy efficiency than fluorescent lights.

The biggest trend today in warehouse lighting is the retrofit of existing Metal Halide lights to T5HO or T8 fluorescent high bay lighting.  By going to fluorescent you can achieve more than you can ever imagine.

Pallet Rack Styles Offer Varying Degree of Density, Efficiency & Price

Our Pallet Rack Systems offer a varying degree of storage density and handling efficiency. As you might guess the more dense and efficient a pallet rack system is the more costly it becomes.  Experienced warehouse and distribution center managers know you must look past the initial cost and focus on quality, density and efficiency. Selective Rack- The most widely used rack system provides 100% access to all pallet locations. Selective rack is very flexible and is offered with a variety of pallet rack accessories. Selective rack consists of upright frames and beams. Selective rack is often configured in singe rows along a wall and back to back rows throughout your warehouse. The typical selective pallet rack layout requires lots of space dedicated to aisles for forklift access. Selective pallet rack is the most affordable pallet rack system available.

Introducing A New Product Line: Warehouse Fans

The best part of my job is making sales calls and getting an inside look at how companies manufacture, warehouse and distribute their products. Last week I was visiting Bass Pro Distribution Center in Springfield, MO.  Bass Pro's warehouse is the second largest warehouse I've ever seen. Second only to the John Deere warehouse in Moline, IL.

Every plant tour teaches me something new. This plant tour taught me how important it is to keep your employees cool. A cool work area increases productivity. Specifically I learned how cool air can travel through flexible ducts called Power Tubes. The Power Tubes are air socks that hang down from the ceiling and are powered by 18" or 22" Tube Axial High Volocity Turbo Fan.

The Power Tube provides a cool gentle breeze for workers. They should be placed along the entrance to picking aisles, near work stations or sortation areas. The fan sock is very easy to install. It's easy to run. They don't require a lot of energy. They are nearly maintenance free.  You can put them together to make longer lengths. You need to mount them in a way to not obstruct lighting.

Rack Placards & Board Placards To Get Excited About

I went on a sales call this morning with Greg Klinge at Crown Packaging Corporation. He brought me in to size up his customers rack needs and offer storage solutions. I like to partner with packaging companies in the sale of rack and shelving. Packaging salesman tend to have an ear to the ground and their feet on the street. Greg Klinge is one of the best. 

While on on our appointment Greg offered a unique solution to one of his customer's common problems. The beams of his pallet rack were marked with black markers and had torn up labels. His customer expained to us that he spends more time at his warehouse job than he does at home. Therefore he wants his warehouse clean and organized. Greg offered a new product he sells calls Rack Placards and his customer got literally giddy with excitement. 

Clean and clearly identifiable racks and shelving in a pick environment are proven to reduce order time and order inaccuracy. The rack placard was designed to identify racks and shelving by providing a clean surface for any label or barcode to be applied and removed effortlessly. Simply roll the placard onto the rack and ID with the same barcode or label you currently use. The Rack Plackard is a much more cost effective and efficient than the alternative plastic sleeves or magnet identification solutions. Rack Placards work great with pallet racks, shelving, flow racks, carton flow racks and pick racks.

 

On plastic bulk boxes, wire mesh containers and corrugated steel containers they have a product called Board Placards that work great. OEM and Tier 1 providers use these placards on their containers, totes and racks. This is a value added service I would like to introduce to my customers.
